An interview with Artyom

- What do you use the computer for?
- Mainly I use the computer to surf the Internet, learn current news and to listen to music.
- Does the computer save time?
- I can’t save time, as when I sit down to the computer just for a little bit I surf the Internet and this process may continue till night time and I go to bed without homework.
- How did you start using a PC?
- I began to use the computer in 2000. 8 years passed and by now I have learnt much about it and can use it easily.
- Has your life changed since you started using the PC??
- Yes, now I have no time.

An interview with Alyosha
What do you use the computerfor? - I need a computer to print documents, to surf the Internet and to play games. In the Internet I search for music, information and read news. Yes, I like to listen to music on the computer.
Does the computer save time? -In my studies the computer saves time: it is not necessary to spend 5 hours to translate the text if you have a program on your computer. You simply type it on a computer and then copy it in the copybook. Besides in the Internet it is possible to find a lot of information necessary for preparation for some subjects at school.
How did you start using a PC? -I began to use a computer in 1992. My first computer was very weak, but at that time it was OK. Some years later we have bought a new computer, it is very user-friendly.
Has your life changed since you started using the PC? -Yes, my eyes have got worse!
On a desert island, would you prefer a human or a computer for company?
-People, because on a desert island there is no electricity and the Internet.

Computerised education

Do you agree with this statement:
Computers cheat students out of mind-expanding experience?

I’m for computerized education. I think that students have access to the best libraries of the world. They have access to a huge database of the Internet. Some people think that students should learn to use their own brains; that students who rely on computers are being cheated out of mind-expanding experience. I find it humorous that parents and teachers call for a limit on access to computers for school children. (Vanya)

We are against computerized education. We think fundamentals rank higher. Students need to be forced to jog their brains. They should learn to use the data they have access to. Some people think computers are an integral part of modern education. However, students brains should be challenged. (Natasha, Kristina)

(10A grade students)

There exist different opinions on advantages of a computer and a book. Some people consider, that computers will replace books, others - books will have advantages above computers. I think that the book will never die. It will exist alongside with a computer.
Undoubtedly, computers allow us to have more free time to be engaged in the favorite affairs, but it from another sight - people depend on a computer, and they start to neglect more important affairs. The book gives us a chance to enjoy classical literature.
For a long time our ancestors conducted annals, described their image of life in books. Due to books, we find out, how our ancestors lived. But unfortunately a lot of books and the information in them were not kept up to nowadays because of accidents, fires, for example. Therefore people have thought up another means of keeping information- computer. The information occupies fewer places.
The books help us to educate and computer helps us to relax. The computer allows us to communicate with people. Books help us understand what kindness is and what is good and what is bad.
To my mind books will coexist with computers.

Books or computers.
Are you interested what will be with books in 20 years? Some people think that computers will replace books; others consider that books will be around as long as people enjoy using them. We think that books and computers will coexist.
The future of books should continue to be bright. They have certain advantages over electronic media. Firstly they’re cheap. Secondly, no batteries or other power is required. People are comfortable with books. Books have been a part of our culture for hundreds of years.
But technology such as the World Wide Web provides an excellent opportunity to access an astronomical amount of information. Possible, the next few years, school will begin to use laptop computers instead of books. Another way computers could help learning is the chance children have of interacting with children from around the world. What a great opportunity to learn about another country from a child living there.
Possible, printed books will remain only in scientific libraries and only specialists will have an access to them, but they will never die. Consequently, books and computers will coexist.

Books or computers.
Some people think that computers will replace books, as new technologies provide both the student and the teacher with so much information more conveniently than the ordinary textbook.
Others think that paper books will always exist, that the future of books should continue to be bright. They have certain advantages over electronic media.
Firstly they’re fairly cheap (at least paperbacks). Secondly no batteries or other power is required (except maybe a light). Thirdly they’re generally very replaceable, so you’re not afraid to take them into situations where they might be destroyed.
I personally think that books will be around as long as people enjoy using them. Books have been a part of our culture for hundreds of years. That won’t change so soon.
To my mind books and computers in the near future, together will help the mankind
